Bruins Down Rockets 6-3

Ryan Howse and Evan Pighin scored twice, while Jadon Potter and Nick Holden added singles as the Chilliwack Bruins downed the visiting Kelowna Rockets 6-3 Saturday night. The win snaps a five game losing streak and improves the Bruins record to 23-24-3-2.

The Rockets opened the scoring with a power play goal by Lucas Bloodoff, his 16th goal of the season at the 2:41 mark of the opening period. The Bruins then rattled off three goals in a span of 2:23 to take a 3-1 lead. Jadon Potter with his 8th of the season, Ryan Howse (5th) and Evan Pighin (12th) gave the Bruins a two goal cusion just 6:36 into the game. The first period ended with the Bruins up 3-1.

Rockets' rookie Tyson Barrie made it 3-2 on the power play when he poked home a loose puck past Bruins netminder Mark Friesen during a goal mouth scramble at the 11:22 mark of the middle frame. Nick Holden put the Bruins up by two at the 17:55 mark while the Bruins were on a two man advantage. It was Holden's 12th goal of the season. The Bruins led 4-2 after two.

Chilliwack upped their lead to 6-2 in the third period on goals by Evan Pighin and Ryan Howse. Kelowna scored the final goal of the game with just under three minutes left in the final period on a goal by Chilliwack native Myles MacRae.

The Bruins outshot the Rockets 34-33. Kelowna went 2/11 on the power play, the Bruins were 2/6. Mark Friesen earned the victory for Chilliwack, his 7th win of the season. Torrie Jung took the loss for Kelowna.

The Bruins next action is Tuesday night when they host the Tri City Americans. Game time is 7pm.

Ice Chips: Bruins forward Chris Collins earned his first WHL point when he picked up an assist on Evan Pighin's first period goal. Collins, a native of Calgary Alberta was selected by the Bruins with the 77th overall pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft... Not dressed for the Bruins tonight were Matt Meropoulis (hand), Cody Smuk (shoulder), Partik Bhungal and Blair Wentworth...Chilliwack remains in 8th place in the Western Conference, two points back of the 7th place Kamloops Blazers and 18 points ahead of ninth place Prince George Cougars. The top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs...The Bruins had been outshot 144-50 in their previous three games but outshot Kelowna 34-33 tonight. Chilliwack had been outshot in each of their seven previous games...prior to the game, Brandon Campos was named the Sportzone Player of the Month for January. In 11 games in January, Campos registerd six goals and six assists.
