Bruins Select Viklund in CHL Import Draft

June 26th, 2008

With the 21st pick in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft the Chilliwack Bruins selected Swedish forward Alexander Viklund.  Viklund, a 6’, 185 pound left winger, has spent the last two seasons playing with Lulea in both the J18 and SuperElit leagues.  Viklund also has been a part of the Swedish National Team Program, participating on the U16, U17, and U18 teams over the past three seasons.  Viklund played 41 games at the SuperElit level, registering 6 goals and six assists as well as 66 minutes in penalties.

Viklund is described as a power forward who is a strong skater, posesses a very good wrist shot.  European scouts have compared Viklund’s skill set to that of Tomas Holmstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, a player who likes traffic and enjoys the physicality of the game.  Viklund worked out with Team Sweden prior to the World Hockey Championships in Quebec City this past May and was described as not looking out of place among the pro players.

"We are happy to have acquired Alexander Viklund," comments Bruins GM Darrell May. "Alexander fits the mould of what we are looking for in a Bruins player and we look forward to welcoming him to our team."
