Mark Friesen made 28 saves to earn his first Western Hockey League shutout and Jadon Potter scored twice to lead the Bruins to a 2-0 win over the visiting Portland Winter Hawks Tuesday night. It was the Bruins second victory in a row and third in their last four games.

It took the locals a while to find their legs in this one. Portland had the home team under siege and on their heels in the early going, and Chilliwack didn't register a shot on goal until the 5:15 mark. Shots on goal favoured Portland 5-1 at that point.

But though they may have been out-played, Chilliwack got the the only goal of the first period on a harmless looking play started by Andy Smith. Working along the left-wing boards, the newest Bruin threw the puck back to the point and defenceman Brandon Manning fired a wrister at the net. Jadon Potter got a stick on the shot, directing it past Portland netminder Kurtis Mucha for a 1-0 lead.

Chilliwack's seventh-ranked penalty killing got a workout late in the opening frame. Manning got sent off for interference at 17:11 and Scott Ramsay followed him to the box 33 seconds later for shooting the puck out of play in his own end, giving Portland an extended five-on-three power play.

Chilliwack killed the extended two-man advantage to escape to the first intermission with the 1-0 lead.

The teams traded stellar scoring chances midway through the second period. Portland's Killian Hutt was thwarted by Chilliwack netminder Mark Friesen after making a nifty play at the blueline.

Eleven seconds later, Chilliwack rookie Kevin Sundher took a Matt Meropoulis pass in the slot and lasered a wrist shot on net, only to see Mucha snare it with a lightning fast glove-hand.

On a power play very late in the period, Potter came within an inch or two of doubling the Chilliwack lead, wheeling off the boards and into the high slot before hitting the cross-bar with his shot.

Shots on goal in the middle frame were 9-4 in favour of the visitors.

Potter gave the Bruins some desperately needed breathing room six minutes and 55 seconds into the final frame. The Saskatchewan native spent a good 20 seconds dipsy-doodling around behind the Portland net before darting in front to stuff the puck between Mucha and the right goal post.

From that point on, it was the Mark Friesen show. The Bruins netminder didn't have a lot to do in the third period. He faced just eight shots in the final frame, and 28 overall, to earn his first WHL shutout and the first goose-egg the Bruins have recorded this season.

With the win, Chilliwack inches ever closer to the .500 mark at 9-11-2-2 heading into a Wednesday night showdown at the Pacific Coliseum versus the Vancouver Giants.

The Bruins are back on home ice Friday night, hosting the high-flying Tri-City Americans (7 p.m.).
